Marc-Andre ter Stegen is 11 years old in Barcelona, but his time at the club could end this summer. This week it was reported that he will be sold during the transfer window when Joan Garcia joins Espanyol – which looks increasingly likely at this stage.
Ter Stegen was undisputed in Barcelona for a number of years until last season, and he was only displaced because he sustained a knee injury that kept him outside for seven months. Even a few weeks ago he was expected to go as a starter for Hansi Flick in the 2025-26 campaign, but things have changed dramatically now that Garcia is being pursued.
As mentioned, Barcelona wants to sell Ter Stegen this summer when Garcia arrives, but the orchestrate of his sale will be easier said than done – that is because Florian Plettenburg has revealed that the German keeper has no plans to leave the La Liga champions during the coming summer transfer window.
“Marc-Andre ter Stegen is fully informed about the plan to sign Joan Garcia, but he wants to stay at the moment. He wants to stay number 1 in the new season. The market is not being investigated, and there are currently no conversations with other clubs. However, FC Barcelona with Joan Laporta are open to offers for him.
Barcelona would be in a tight place if Ter Stegen would stay, given that he is one of the highest earners in the club. His departure would go a long way to facilitate their financial problems, but this will not be easy if the 33-year-old of him is.
But with the following season as the run -up to the World Cup 2026, Ter Stegen will be desperately a starter. And with that that is unlikely in Barcelona, he can eventually look to continue.
