Manchester United cannot wait for Marcus Rashford to rediscover his best form and would be better off cutting losses, according to Gordon Strachan.
Rashford has scored three goals in five games for United since Ruben Amorim arrived as manager. He has totaled seven goals and three assists in 23 appearances this season but is considered expendable by United's chiefs, who are keen to offload players in the January transfer window.
The problem is that Rashford is paid £325,000 per week on a contract until June 2028, having signed a lucrative extension following his 30-goal season in 2022/2023. Rashford's professionalism has at times been questioned, with a drunken trip to Belfast last season being a recent example of his off-field problems.
Former United midfielder Strachan is fed up with Rashford's inconsistent form and believes Amorim's arrival could be the time for the 27-year-old to leave. “Well, that's one of the problems Man United have. We just have to hold our breath for Marcus Rashford to play well,” he told Gambling Zone.
“And we have to experience this every season, hoping that Marcus will improve. “I hope he starts to smile and I hope he starts to enjoy the game.” Do me a favor. If you don't like it at the club, leave. Just leave so we can all move on. You're a good football player, son.
“Would you as Man United fans just keep waiting for Marcus to do well? I think the conversation should now continue and just be put away. You either want to play or you don't want to play. Do me a favor if you don't like it, then do something else.”
Amorim has deployed Rashford as a central striker and is confident he can get the best out of him in the long term. “We will try to find the right solution for him, but he has to be Marcus first and foremost to try to get back to that moment,” he said earlier this month. “Then he will get all the help from the staff, the club and the fans, because he is a Manchester United boy. But he has to be the first to want it.”
Rashford does not appear to be thinking about leaving his boyhood club. “He (Amorim) has come in at a busy time and hopefully the connection will continue to grow and grow,” he said recently.
“He came in with a great attitude and he conveyed that to the players. The atmosphere is one of the most special things about his club and playing in this great stadium is always a great feeling.
“It's still early, but I feel energetic and ready for the next match. This match has only just ended, but the next one is always the center of attention for the players.”
