Maresca ‘concerned’ about Chelsea goalkeeping situation after Jorgensen error

Enzo Maresca admitted that he was worried about the goalkeeper situation of Chelsea after the mistake by Filip Jorgensen was expensive in their 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa.

Chelsea took a lead in the ninth minute in Villa Park when Enzo Fernandez entered the cross of Pedro Neto, but Villa returned to the second half.

Replacement Marcus Rashford delivered two assists for colleague loaner Marco Asensio, where Jorgensen let him go straight through him.

Chelsea lost two Premier League matches this season after they led during the break, after they had only suffered such a loss in the last five seasons.

Jorgensen was promoted earlier this month to the role of First-Choice goalkeeper, in which Robert Sanchez was dropped after committing five errors that led to goals this season-the most player in the Premier League.

Asked if he was worried about the situation, Maresca told the match of the day of BBC Sport: “I always worry, even when we won competitions, I was worried.

“Now I am sure. The problem with keepers is that it is a delicate position and when they make a mistake, everyone can see.

“Unfortunately, our keeper made a mistake today. This is a time when we have to support each other and try to stay strong.”

Chelsea had 15 shots to Villas 12 during the game, with most of their chances in the first half – when the Blues 1.53 expected goals (XG) created to villas 0.82.

“If you are not clinical, this competition is always open – if you make a mistake, as we have done on the second goal,” said Maresca.

“If we have the chance, we have to take it. Again, we have shown today that we can be good for long parts of the game. But that is not enough.

“The performance must be complete. We have to score goals if we have the chance and defend well, but I thought we defended well today. It's a moment when we also had a bit of bad luck.”

Villa Boss Unai Emery was now happy with the impact of January arrivals Asensio and Rashford.

He said: “We had the need to improve the team and have more players to help with our goals: try to stand in the top seven or eight and try to compete in the FA Cup and the Champions League.

“Of course we brought the players to think about it. Then we had to try to adjust quickly, with many meetings and getting information about the field.”
