Maresca: Penalty miss won’t affect Palmer ‘in a negative way’

Enzo Maresca says he does not expect Cole Palmer to be hit by his missed penalty during last weekend's victory over Leicester City.

Palmer's Spot-Kick, who was saved by Mads Hermansen, was his first failure in 13 attempts and ended the best Premier League 100% penal record.

It means that the English international has not scored in one of his last nine games in all competitions.

Nevertheless, Maresca is not worried about the 22-year-old.

“Absolutely, Cole is going to miss more punishments,” said the Chelsea boss.

“I have no doubt in the future that he will miss more punishments, but he will score more punishments. I don't think it influences him in a negative way.”

Palmer trained on Wednesday after he had been absent for the past two days, just like Reece James and Christopher Nunku, although it is still to be seen whether they will perform against FC Copenhagen on Stamford Bridge on Thursday.

The blues are 2-1 for the good in the Europa Conference League Last-16 after the first stage of last week in the Danish capital.

“I was surprised last week because I watched many matches, and they always defended the ball,” Maresca noted. “Then, against us, they were a five line – even in the last game they played two days ago, they were a four line.”

The Italian said that Chelsea would be without the services of Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke until after the international break, while Malo Gusto could return this weekend.

“We have two games, and in the end we have the international break, where we can restore the energy, we can restore the players and go for the last sprint,” Maresca added.
