Maresca rues Chelsea’s lack of clinical edge in Everton victory

Enzo Maresca believes that his Chelsea team should improve their clinical lead for the goal, despite gaining an important 1-0 home victory on Everton on Saturday.

Maresca, who serves a touchline ban for collecting three yellow cards, looked up from the stands while the first half of Nicolas Jackson made sure that the blues would end the day in the top five of the Premier League.

Chelsea dominated the first half and went into the break with an expected goals (XG) a total of 0.49 of their five shots, while he also limits Everton to just one attempt on Robert Sanchez's goal.

A triple change in the second half of David Moyes improved the toffees, but they were confronted with an inspired representation of Sanchez, which produced late on a number of brilliant rescues.

The Maresca team had the same number of shots (five) as Everton after the interval, and the Italian felt that his players were getting their foot off the gas in the second half.

“A lot has happened this season. We have no longer scored goals to kill the game. We dropped a bit in the second half, but in general we deserved to win,” Maresca told BBC Sport.

However, the determining moment came from Jackson, where the Chelsea striker chose the bottom corner in the 27th minute with a nice effort from the edge of the box.

It was indeed Jackson's first goal in 13 Premier League performances since he was against Brentford in December, and his longest drought in the competition.

It was also Chelsea's first goal in the first 45 minutes of a Premier League match in seven trips, so that their longest streak has been terminated since 2012.

Although Jackson found the back of the net, it was again a frustrating meeting for Cole Palmer, who has now been without a competition goal since January.

“He needs that,” Maresca said that Jackson ended his goal drought. “Cole needs that too, and I have no doubt that Cole will soon do the same.”

For Everton, they are now without a victory at Stamford Bridge in their last 30 visits (D13 L17), with Moyes' bad run in competitions to the blues that continue.

The Scot has won none of its 20 Premier League matches to Chelsea, similar to its longest Windless Run on the road against a single side in the competition (also 20 against Liverpool).

Everton boss Moyes expressed his disappointment about the ease with which Jackson was achieved in the competition-winning moment.

The pass from Jordan Pickford to Beto was easily pinched by Trevoh Chalobah, with the ball at the back of the net just a few seconds later after some quickly thinking of Enzo Fernandez.

Moyes said: “You see it all the time in football. We played the ball in the feet of the center-forward, he does not retain possession and the opposition continues and scores.

“We don't accept it, but the modern game sees many players doing it. We try to play better and these are the things we should be better at.”
