ENZO MARESCA claims Noni Madueke “must do more”… despite the Chelsea star grabbing a goal and an assist last night.
The England winger, 22, was in good form as the Blues beat Southampton 5-1 at St Mary's.
But boss Maresca wants Madueke to “show more ambition” and admits he is unimpressed with his player's application to training.
After last night's match, the Italian said: “Noni can do a lot more. He can do much more.
“The moment he starts to score or assist and is happy, he starts to drop a little bit and the reason why he didn't play is because I don't like the way he trained.
“He has to understand that he has to train well every day. He must be ambitious.
“He scored one tonight. He has to go for the second and the third. He has to make more assists.”
Before last night's thrashing at Southampton, Madueke had scored just once since scoring a hat-trick against Wolves in August.
After being critical of Madueke's application, Maresca also expressed some praise.
The 44-year-old continued: “But overall he's doing great, he's doing fantastic. In terms of numbers he is doing even better.
“Noni needs to understand that he has to work more because he can be much, much, much better.”
Chelsea took the lead in the seventh minute at St Mary's when Axel Disasi headed in Enzo Fernandez's corner.
It didn't take long for Saints to draw level, with Kyle Walker-Peters producing a brilliant piece of skill on the byline before teeing up Joe Aribo to score.
Madueke then took advantage of a poor pass from Southampton stopper Joe Lumley and set up Christopher Nkunku on the tee for an easy finish.
The winger then grabbed a goal himself, sliding the ball to his left foot before driving the ball past Lumley into the bottom corner.
Things went from bad to worse for the home side before half-time, with Jack Stephens sent off for pulling Marc Cucurella's hair.
Cole Palmer fired home from close range to make it 4-1, before Jadon Sancho completed the rout late on.
Chelsea's impressive victory moved Chelsea up to second place in the Premier League.
