After such a successful collegial wrestling career, Kerr made the transition to MMA after his teammate, Mark Coleman also moved to the sport.

When Coleman became the first heavyweight champion in the UFC history, Kerr knew that he could also find similar success in the promotion.

Nevertheless, he had to earn his shot in premier promotion, and he did this by dominating the MMA scene in Brazil.

His MMA debut, however, was not as easy as he had hoped because he was forced by his manager at the time, Richard Hamilton, after Kerr had doubted whether he was cut for MMA.

Fortunately, the dominant wrestler made his debut at World Vale Tudo Championship 3 against UFC veteran Paul Varelans and then won the fight via the first round stoppage.

But it was his next fight against Mestre Hulk who feared Kerr so. Hulk was a Brazilian capoeira specialist and was both police teacher and his MMA career.

Early in the fight, Hulk looked to show his rotating attacks, but Kerr caught his leg within a minute of the fight and took the Brazilian to the mat.

'The Smashing Machine' began to man trading Hulk and beating his ribs, which did not wear any gloves at the time, because Hulk seemed to give up.

Hulk began to shuffle his body closer and closer to the edge, while Kerr continued to rule from huge shots to the face and then hit Hulk's teeth. The Brazilian quickly slid under the ropes and was then disqualified from the fight.

Kerr then earned a UFC contract with a broken hand

With the World Vale Tudo championship a one-night tournament, Kerr went up to the final, which he fought with a broken hand after his domination over Hulk.

Despite the fact that he had broken his hand, Kerr Fabio Gurgel defeated through a unanimous decision in the final and earned his shot in the UFC only a few months later.
