Marquinhos insists Brazil’s players must shoulder blame for ’embarrassing’ loss

Brazil should not allow a repeat of the “embarrassing” levels they showed against Argentina in their 4-1 defeat, says Marquinhos.

And although coach Dorival Junior has come for criticism, Marquinhos emphasized that the Selecao players should be blamed.

Brazil was hammered on Tuesday by their fierce rivals, while Julian Alvarez, Enzo Fernandez, Alexis Mac Allister and Giuliano Simeone ensured that Argentina celebrated the qualification for the World Cup 2026 in style.

Matheus Cunha scored for Brazil, which are fourth in the Conmebol qualifying class ranking, where the top six automatically takes care of the tournament of next year.

“What we have done here today can no longer happen,” said Captain Marquinhos of Brazil to TV Globo.

“It's hard to talk about it in the heat of the moment. It's embarrassing.

“We started the game very badly, far below what we could do and they have a great series of trust.

“They knew how to play smart. I'm sorry for our fans.”

For the first time, Argentina has completed the double over Brazil in a World Cup qualifying ideas, and the wave between the old enemies has only grown last year.

The Selecao, which only had three shots and has only collected 0.12 expected goals, have difficulty going under Dorival, but Marquinhos says that the players must now take responsibility.

“It is not only the coach's fault, it is also the blame of the players,” he added.

“There is no secret formula in football where you make a choice and it works. We can do it all better.

“We have to share the debt. It's about understanding the moment and being humble.”
