He may not be a Manchester United player anymore, but Mason Greenwood could still make the club a big chunk of money in the near future.
The 23-year-old joined Marseille last summer on a £25.6million contract, ending his 17-year association with the Red Devils. He has been in top form since then, scoring 11 goals in 17 appearances in all competitions for the Ligue 1 club this season.
United may have parted ways with the striker for good, but it is in their interests that he continues to perform well in France. This is due to the 'hefty' sell-on clause they agreed with Marseille during transfer negotiations last year. According to TBR Football, the clause could go up to 50 percent, meaning United could rake in millions if Greenwood moves to another club.
Last month it was claimed that Greenwood's performances had attracted the interest of Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Juventus and Barcelona – who had had the Englishman in their sights for some time. It is thought that a bid of around £60 million would be enough to secure Greenwood's services, which would consequently net United around £30 million.
The powers that be at Old Trafford would undoubtedly welcome such a deal with open arms, given minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe's financial prudence since taking over all football operations at the club last year. New manager Ruben Amorim will likely be keen to bring in new players to mold the squad in his image, but with finances a bit tight at the moment, transfer plans have reportedly been scaled back.
A blockbuster move for Sporting CP's Viktor Gyokeres is on the horizon, but recent reports linking United with a move for PSG's Randal Kolo Muani suggest the Swede may be a little out of their price range – at least this month. After all, his release clause is £83 million, and with clubs like Bayern Munich, PSG and Arsenal also chasing him, there's a good chance he will cost even more.
Elsewhere, a transfer is being touted for Victor Osimhen, who is currently on loan from Galatasaray to Napoli. The Nigerian has already scored many goals in Turkey, but there is a release clause in his loan deal, which will allow him to sign for another club if Napoli receives an acceptable offer.
Amorim is also reportedly keen to sign one or two full-backs this month. The position is crucial in his 3-4-3 system, and it is an area of the squad where United are particularly weak at the moment.
Marseille's sale of Greenwood, who was loaned from United to La Liga club Getafe last season, would free up some money for the Portuguese coach, but there is no guarantee that will happen anytime soon. Marseille are currently flying high in Ligue 1 and are just one place behind top side PSG.
Greenwood has played a central role in their recent success, and a mid-season exit would be damaging to the club, who are desperate to bounce back and regain a Champions League spot after finishing eighth – their worst domestic performance in almost ten years – in 2023. /24 campaign. Nevertheless, if its strong form continues, the French club will have little say in the matter.
