Mauricio Pochettino: “There’s nothing to discuss with Pulisic; the past is behind us”

The national team of the American gentlemen for the upcoming friendly matches against South Korea and Japan has put a lot of conversation – and not just for those who made the cut. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino omitted various high -profile names, including Weston McKennie, Gio Reyna, Johnny Cardoso and Matt Turner, who would all be expected.

With only months to go before the World Cup 2026 starts on its own soil, Pochettino uses this window to test new talent. “This is the last chance to do it,” he said, referring to his decision to call new players instead of established veterans. The message is clear: nobody is guaranteed.

Pulisic problems in the past

Christian Pulisic is back in the fold after missing the Gold Cup this summer – a decision that has fueled controversy. But Pochettino insists that the past is behind them. “We didn't talk to Christian. There is nothing to talk about. What happened is in the past. We look ahead,” he said. The AC Milan star is expected to arrive in top form, a strong preseason and a solid start of the Serie A campaign.

The omission of Weston McKennie raised eyebrows, but Pochettino explained that the midfielder of Juventus needed time to settle in the club life after a demanding summer, including participation in the club's World Cup.

“We know Weston well. He didn't have a full preseason, so we gave him the chance to concentrate on his club,” Pochettino said. The same logic applied to Johnny Cardoso, who recently came to Atlético Madrid.

An open system, a competitive mindset

Pochettino emphasized that the USMNT works under an open system – no player is locked up in a place. “Everyone has to fight,” he said. With injuries that accumulate in the summer, the coach sees this as a crucial moment to evaluate new talent and build up depth for the World Cup.

Gio Reyna's way to recovery

As far as Gio Reyna is concerned, Pochettino expressed optimism. “I am happy for Gio. I hope he feels like a football player again. To be happy, he has to play. As soon as he starts to enjoy his game again, we will consider him,” he said.
