Messi named in preliminary squad for Argentina’s June World Cup qualifiers

Forward Lionel Messi was mentioned in the provisional team of Argentina 28 players for the qualifications of next month's world cup on Thursday, after an injury forced him to miss the matches against Uruguay and Brazil in March.

Defending champion Argentina, who play Chile and Colombia in June, have already secured their place on the World Cup 2026 in the absence of Messi after a 1-0 win over Uruguay in March, before they hit rivals with 4-1.

“It is a shame to miss these two very special matches with the national team against Uruguay and Brazil,” Messi wrote in an Instagram story after being forced to withdraw with a Liesstam.

“As always I wanted to be there, but at the last minute a non-so-serious injury that forced me for a while before I returned to play me outside.”

Messi returned to action for Inter Miami later in the month and has since scored six goals in all competitions for the club.

The 37-year-old will also play in the Club World Cup, where Miami starts their campaign on 14 June, four days after Argentina plays Colombia.

Coach Lionel Scaloni also includes Nottingham Forest -midfielder Nicolas Dominguez, who last appeared before Argentina in 2021.

Defender Valentin Barco and attacker Valentin Castellanos, who have not played for Argentina since last year, are also mentioned in the list.
