Lionel Messi was one of 19 people to receive the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom from US President Joe Biden.
The award is the country's highest civilian honor and recognizes Messi's contributions as a star player in the MLS and his charity work.
Widely recognized as one of the greatest footballers of all time, the Argentine moved to the US in 2023 and won the Leagues Cup and the MLS Supporters Shield in his two campaigns with Inter Miami.
He also led his international side to a second consecutive Copa America title in July.
Messi produced 1.82 goals per 90 minutes during the 2024 MLS season, the second-highest rate of his career – he missed 105 days of club action, the second-longest season break of his career, due to playing in the Copa America and an injury layoff after that tournament.

An official statement from the White House read: “President Biden believes that great leaders keep the faith, give everyone a fair chance, and put decency above all else.
“These nineteen Americans are great leaders who have made America a better place. They are great leaders because they are good people who have made extraordinary contributions to their country and the world.
“He [Messi] supports healthcare and education programs for children around the world through the Leo Messi Foundation and serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.”
Messi did not attend the ceremony to receive his medal due to a scheduling conflict.
Messi's contract in Miami expires after the 2025 season, but there is no certainty yet about his next steps.
