Michael Chandler fears Conor McGregor could become president before grudge fight ever happens

Michael Chandler was booked to fight against Conor McGregor more than two years ago, but is still not closer to the biggest cash fight in sport.

It was January 2023 when former Bellator champion Chandler was announced as coaching opposite McGregor at the Ultimate Fighter season 27. However, it took more than a year before the fight was booked for UFC 303, and only a few weeks from the Irish were forced to cancel because of a broken toe.

Since then, Chandler has fought against Charles Oliveira once and has now been booked to compete against Paddy Pimblett on UFC 314. He still maintains interest in fighting McGregor, but seems to understand that it is an unlikely dream on this point.

Michael Chandler seems to be the only person who still holds on to the hope of a fight between he and Conor McGregor who ever happen.

After the last week including a visit to the White House and his official announcement of a run for the Irish president, it seems that the former champion never went to the Octagon.

“Love him or hates him, Conor is one of the greatest Irish stars, if not the largest Irish star in the world,” Chandler told Covers.com. “Have that representative, or you think he is a great representative of Ireland or not, he is still a big name that has weight.

'To go [to the White House] On St. Paddy's Day to meet Trump to convey the struggles that Ireland is going through, and some of the cracks in the Irish government that Conor is talking about, plus the Irish presidency he has talked about lately – it is very interesting.

“We can get President McGregor before we get Chandler versus McGregor. If that happens, I don't think he will fight at all. I think Conor would love that position of power. He would love that position of celebrity. It is a new mountain that he can climb, and if he does, it will be very interesting.”

After his meeting with Donald Trump in the White House this week, Conor McGregor stated that wearing hats with the 'Make Ireland Great Again' Slogan. And now he all seems like a run for president and announces his candidacy on social media.

He is considered a great outsider, since he still has to secure a nomination and is considered one of the most polarizing celebrities in Ireland. But he is convinced that he can not only win, but can also turn the mainly ceremonial position into a position where he can demand real changes.

In a long Instagram post, McGregor said: “This is the future of Ireland with me as president. All citizens of Ireland to have a voice and a choice on their future! God bless our people! Voice McGregor and show your voice!”
