Mikel Arteta admitted that Arsenal has deteriorated in the Premier League compared to previous seasons.
The Gunners record their lowest points in total in three seasons, Liverpool secured the title two weeks ago with four more games.
The North London club is at 67 points and can only end with a maximum of 76 because they have three games left, starting with newly crowned champions Liverpool on Sunday.
Artetas men reached a point count of 89 and 84 in the previous two campaigns.
Arteta said: 'In the Premier League we went one step back.
“With the points we have created, it is clear that we have not done as well as last season, that is clear.”
Arteta confirmed that his players will hold an honorary guard for the men of Arne Slot, and that it could be a motivating factor in their attempt to win the title next year.
“Yes, something you have to drive, motivate and pain is probably a good one to use, sometimes if you don't really want to do something, but it's the right thing to do, usually like a motivation for next season,” he said.
About the need for Arsenal to greatly end their last three games, he added: 'We cannot win the Premier League, that is clear, but the last 16 days we have to go with three more games.
“We must ensure that we at least make ourselves proud to compete at the end in the way we deserve.”
