Arsenal has not won a big trophy since the FA Cup 2020 and are on track for their third consecutive Premier League Runner-Up Finish, with a quarterfinals of the Champions League
Mikel Arteta is convinced that his Arsenal side will soon win the Premier League title. The Gunners finished second in each of the last two seasons and are on course to end this period again.
Liverpool is now 11 points ahead and played a game less than the side of Arteta. Saturday's draw in Everton was their newest slip -up, in which the Gunners had dominated the collision in Goodison Park.
But they only had the first half of Leandro Trossard to show for their efforts, in which Iliman Ndiaye ranked from the penalty spot. With the Premier League out of reach and were dumped out of the FA Cup in January, the Champions League is now everything they have to play for.
But to win that competition, they will have to overcome Real Madrid in the quarterfinals. The first stage takes place at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday evening, with Los Blancos also struggling in their own title offer.
The 2020 FA Cup remains the last piece of silverware that Arsenal has won. And on the way to Tuesday's Titanic game, Arteta has admitted that he believes it is time to add to their trophy cabinet.
“We turned it around, and now it's time to win. The reality is that we have taken so many steps that it is time to win. Ultimately, the judgment is normal, because this is arsenal; otherwise we would not be arsenal. People should judge whether we win or not,” he said like.
“If you are close by, it is at the end of you. If this competition is the best in the world, it is for a reason, and that is because there are six teams who can win it. The title will not be 'they have tried', the title will be different and I don't want to use that word and I don't want to use that word [laughs].
“Ultimately, we have to know where we are and what history we have had. This club has not been to the Champions League quarter finals twice in 15 years, which is a long time. But we have to create our own history, and that means that this knockout stages are achieved, win them and go to the semi -final. That is the next step we have to take.”
Arteta could not hide his disappointment with Saturday's draw to Everton. He credited Liverpool for the way they have steamed their way to the title, but insisted that his side should have made it harder for their rivals.
“Deserving Liverpool, the way they win their football matches. I am talking about a reflection of what happened today, which was really relevant to the score and there is no doubt that they had nothing, apart from that,” he said.
“But that clearly changes the momentum and the results. I think we have earned more, but that is what we got at the end in a really difficult place to come. What they do, they are doing really well, who constantly put the balls in the last line, deal with direct play and second actions.
“I think we had not admitted anything in the game, which was really positive. We were 1-0 up, had a number of big chances, going in spaces – we did not complete the action in the second half. We didn't start well, the game did not dominate, we had to be more aggressive, have more rooms.
We started the opposite, we gave the ball directly to the keeper, direct play, problems. Again, direct game and the referee decides to give a penalty. That changes the course of the game. We had two big chances to win the game, we didn't convert them, so we have to accept the point. “
