Mikel Arteta orders Arsenal’s raging set-piece coach back to the bench during disappointing defeat by PSG

Mikel Arteta had to intervene to calm his set-piece coach in the final phase of Arsenal's 1-0 defeat by PSG on Tuesday evening.

Arsenal appeared in their first semifinal of the Champions League in 16 years and was left early on an Ousmane Dembele strike, but tried to make a way back in the game and thought they were the same in the second half that Mikel Merino led Decran's Free-Kick home.

After a VAR assessment of three minutes, however, Merino was assessed to be offside and the goal was written off. The Gunners continued to insist on an equalizer, with set pieces that wanted one of their best chances to find it, but Merino polluted goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from a corner in the stop time to relieve the pressure on PSG.

Arsenal's set-piece coach Nicolas Jover was furious with the decision to punish Merino and began to express his frustration with the fourth official.

He was seen gestures on the touchline, and Arteta had to intervene quickly to prevent him from getting into trouble because he had a strict word with Jover before he pushed him back to the couch.

The last whistle was only a few seconds later, with Arsenal now confronted with a tough task to reach their first Champions League final since 2006.

Jover has since attracted a lot of attention since he arrived at Arsenal in 2021 because of his tendency to be in the technical area and to give animated instructions when the team gets a dead-ball situation.

Arsenal has become a feared team of set pieces with Jover who helps from the touchline, but his behavior has not fallen well with everyone.

In December, Gary Neville Jover noticed 'the most annoying guy in football' after he was irritated by the coaches of the coach.

His remark came during a Watchalong when Arsenal Manchester United defeated 2-0 in the Emirates, with both goals from the Gunners from the corners.

Jamie Carragher also focused on Jover last week when Arsenal from a corner in their 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace.

The former Liverpool defender emphasized after the game that Arsenal admitted the second highest percentage of goals of corners in the top flight this season, because he joked that Jover might have to be replaced.

'In terms of percentage, only Man United are worse this season than Arsenal-SET set. So if we make a lot about the set-piece coach … he is absolutely from this world in terms of progress, but they have a big problem defensive.

'Do we have to cut his wages in two? Do they need a defensive set-piece coach?

'It was one of the stories of the season and rightly so. It's incredible. You feel that they are going to score a goal of a set piece in every match or get very close to scoring.

“Of course he had a huge impact, but it's funny that they themselves have enormous problems.”
