Mikel Merino makes new Arsenal mentality vow after Gunners fall short yet again

After losing PSG, Arsenal has now lost each of the last four semi -finals that they have reached in all competitions, and is unable to win one of the eight legs

Mikel Merino believes that Arsenal's “huge learning curve” will help them win big trophies. The Gunners are sent to a fifth year without silverware after the almost men of Mikel Arteta from the Champions League to Paris Saint Germain have crashed.

Unbelievable, Arsenal has lost their last four semi -finals in all competitions – without winning one of the eight legs – and they will now be confronted with serious question marks about their mentality. But Merino says that the last defeat against PSG on the back of a difficult season of frustration and injuries in the Premier League will be a valuable lesson in the longer term.

Gunners -midfielder Merino, part of the winning team of Spain, last summer, believes that the younger Arsenal players will be stronger for the experience and he now has to win silverwork.

Merino said: “It is really disappointing because of the mentality of this club, this team is always to try to win big things and at the same time this season is a huge learning curve for us because we have such a young team, not so much experience in these situations.

“But after playing Real Madrid in the Bernabeu, after playing against PSG, it will be a huge learning point for the future. We will be stronger again, we will be more ready. It is fully true that you first have to lose to win later and those experiences are really, really useful.

“In the future we will remember these types of games and remember what it takes to win against top clubs, to win in games that you will get in the Champions League and also in the Premier League.

“So, the things that someone might think of a setback, we must consider them something to learn.

“We must be really proud of what we have achieved, but also try to learn from it because we know that we have made mistakes and the good is that we know, we will learn, we will improve this summer and work harder to improve ourselves to improve.

“We must force ourselves to be stronger in the future, for sure. I think that will certainly be ready in the future.”

Merino insisted that PSG – in their 13th season in the Knock -Outpass – are an example of never giving up, while Arsenal also came close to the Premier League title race in the past two seasons. This season would be the year that they won a big trophy, but briefly arrived in the interior and in Europe.

They are also confronted with a difficult end of the campaign with a trip to Liverpool on Sunday and then in Newcastle home and Southampton. They still have to secure a Champions League slot while they also run the danger to lose second place. But Merino insists that they will continue until the end of the campaign, despite the fact that their European heartaches cast a huge shade.

Merino added: “Nobody has the feeling that this season is over, we know that we have big things for us and this game today has to feel energy for the future to end with a good atmosphere, in the dressing room, with a good atmosphere with the crowd.

“We have to show everyone that we are still hungry for more. We have to finish the Ion season to go to summer with a feeling that we can come back stronger.”
