Match report
Rafael Leao scored the only goal at San Siro as AC Milan defeated Girona 1-0 to boost their hopes of automatic qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League.
The Portuguese winger's first-half strike helped the Rossoneri climb into the top eight after a fifth straight win, while confirming their opponents' elimination from the competition.
Sergio Conceicao's side took early control of proceedings, hitting the woodwork twice through Theo Hernandez and Yunus Musah.
However, the breakthrough came in the 37th minute when Leao latched onto Ismael Bennacer's through ball and fired into the roof of the net.
Girona thought they had equalized just before the end, but Bryan Gil's neat curling attempt was disallowed for offside.
That was as close as the visitors came after the break to leveling the match, with Milan comfortably seeing off the win that moved them up to sixth place, two points ahead of Aston Villa in ninth.
3 – Before Rafael Leão, Zlatan Ibrahimovic was the last #ACMilan player to score in three consecutive #UCL matches: five in a row, between 2011 and 2012. Thread.#MilanGirona

Data Debrief: Leao matches Zlatan
For the first time in twenty years, as they reached the final, Milan recorded five consecutive wins in the Champions League.
Leao decided the match with his third goal in as many games in the competition, making him the first Rossoneri player to score in three consecutive games in the competition since Zlatan Ibrahimovic between 2011 and 2012.
As for Girona, they are only the second team to lose each of their first four Champions League away games without scoring a single goal, after Rapid Wien between 1996 and 2005.
They are also only the second Spanish team to lose six games in a single Champions League season, after Villarreal lost all six games in the 2011/2012 season.
