Milan sack Fonseca after just six months in charge

Paulo Fonseca has been fired by Milan.

Milan drew 1-1 with Roma at San Siro on Sunday, leaving them eighth in Serie A.

They have won just two of their last seven league games as they sit 12th in the table out of 36 teams in the Champions League.

The nineteen-time Italian champions are eight points behind the top four and fourteen points behind leader Atalanta.

“Milan announces that Fonseca has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the men's first team,” Milan confirmed in a statement on Monday.

Fonseca was appointed in June to replace Italian Stefano Pioli, who had helped Milan win the league title during his five-year tenure. In his final season he finished second and 19 points behind champions Inter.

Expectations would therefore be high from the start for former Roma coach Fonseca, who arrived at Lille after two seasons.

However, Milan won only seven of its seventeen league matches this season.

Amid speculation about his sacking after Sunday's match, Fonseca was in an optimistic mood, insisting he was “not afraid of anything”.

Former Porto boss Sergio Conceicao has been tipped to take over as Milan are in action in the Supercoppa Italiana later this week.
