Milan’s ‘serious’ attitude impresses Fonseca

Paulo Fonseca praised the “serious” attitude shown by his Milan team in their emphatic Coppa Italia victory over Sassuolo.

Milan took a four-goal lead at half-time to end hopes of an upset by the Serie B leaders, with Fonseca's team eventually winning 6–1.

The hosts were clinical at San Siro, scoring six goals from just 1.9 expected goals, while conceding eight of their 15 attempts on target.

Samuel Chukwueze, Davide Calabria, Rafael Leao, Tammy Abraham and the in-form Tijjani Reijnders were on target, and Fonseca was quick to praise his team's mentality.

“We played a great match, a beautiful first half, which also helped us manage the players,” Fonseca told Italian broadcaster Mediaset.

“Nothing to complain about, we played a very serious match. The attitude of the players was very serious and I am satisfied.”

Fonseca made eight changes from the team that beat Empoli 3-0 at the weekend, and the manager was pleased with the reaction of the players coming in.

“I've always said that I have to have confidence in all the players, that's why they all play.

“Today I am very happy because we had players who had played less and played a great match. They told me that they are always ready to play. That is what I want to hear.”

“I think it was a problem in the past. The attitude towards the big teams has always been perfect.

“But the attitude towards the other teams has always been lacking. That's what we had [on Tuesday].”
