Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold Liverpool contracts: Positive talks between club and trio over new deals

Talks remain ongoing between Liverpool and the representatives of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold to give them new contracts.

However, the dialogue has been very positive and has made progress, with negotiations conducted on all sides in a very respectful manner.

Liverpool wants to do the right thing for the players, but also for the club. It is very clear that Salah and Van Dijk want to stay. They have been unequivocal about that, and Salah's comments to the press actually underline how much he wants to stay at Liverpool.

He loves the city, his daughters go to school there. He doesn't want to change. He wants to become a Liverpool legend and continue to break the records he has set.

The same goes for Van Dijk. He wants to continue to lead Liverpool forward.

'Contrast between Salah and Van Dijk and Trent'

The contrast is with Alexander-Arnold, who has great interest from Real Madrid.

His comments recently about wanting to win the Ballon d'Or are very much in line with that Real Madrid hymn sheet – it's their sales pitch to players to go and win him at their club.

With Alexander-Arnold it will take a little more elbow grease from Liverpool.

It could be a lot more expensive to get that deal over the line given his age and what he also means to the club as an academy graduate. It would count as a pure win in the books, so it is a somewhat more complex situation.

You get the feeling that now that Van Dijk and Salah want to stay and the club wants to find a solution, there might be a nice Christmas present for the Liverpool supporters – and that you might see Van Dijk in front of the Christmas tree again as a replica of when he was first signed in December 2017.

Jota and Alisson return to training

Liverpool have been boosted by the return of striker Diogo Jota and goalkeeper Alisson to training.

The pair were involved in Monday's session after the Merseyside derby was postponed due to Storm Darragh.

Jota has not played since October 20, when he injured his chest and has missed the last ten matches.

Alisson suffered a hamstring injury against Crystal Palace earlier that month.
