Former Premier League star Moise Kean collapsed on the field during the Fiorentina collision with Hellas Verona on Sunday afternoon.
The Italian attacker joined Fiorentina at the start of the season after spells in Juventus, Everton and Paris Saint-Germain, and has 15 goals in the Serie A scoring.
His most recent outing, however, ended in painful scenes, with Kean left the ball after a heavy collision.
As he tried to win back, Kean slid out and his head made contact with the knee of Pawel Dawidowicz while throwing the ball with Diego Coppola.
He went down and kept his face in clear discomfort, but was allowed to play despite getting a long treatment on the field of Fiorentina's medical staff.
Upon his return, the former Everton and PSG was seen to the front sporting plasters on a cut above his left eye of the collision.
Nevertheless, Kean went back to the center circle just after the resumption of the game, with both sets of players who were frantically gesturing for help with caring scenes.
After receiving more treatment, Kean was taken off the field on a stretcher with a neck brace and towards the ambulance of the pitchside.
Reports in Italy claimed that the player was aware after he had been taken off the field on a stretcher and was accompanied to the hospital.
“ACF Fiorentina announces that the player Moise Kean suffered a head injury during the match against Verona,” said a statement on the official website of Fiorentina shortly after the last whistle.
“The player is in the hospital for checks.”
It is the second time this season that a Fiorentina player Mid game has collapsed, with Keans teammate Edoardo Bove who suffers a cardiac arrest during a competition in September.
Bove, on loan in Fiorentina from Roma, was present for Sunday's game and according to reports, the Italy U21 International turned away while the events unfolded on the field.
Fiorentina then lost the game 1-0 after a 95th minute winner for the hosts, but Viola Manager insisted that the well-being of his attacker was of the utmost importance in his conference after the game.
“I was worried about the touchline and hope it is nothing serious,” said the head coach.
“The health of the player is the most important thing.”
Bove's future Italy is unclear after he was equipped with an implanted defibrillator after his collapse earlier in the season; Series A rules prevent a player with one of one.
“I know this is a temporary condition. My goal is to play again in June, “said Bove in January. “I still have a few (medical) visits to do, the doctors have to flood all the information.”
“If I decide to keep it, I can't play in Italy,” he added. 'This is where health comes for the individual, I am not saying that the rule is wrong.
'Abroad, yes, (it is possible to play) practically everywhere. Football is too important for me, I can't allow myself to give up. I will try again, without a doubt. I will also see how I am, if I am scared, if I don't feel calm, then everything will change. '
