Italian manager Luciano Spalletti will have to plan the first qualifications without Moise Kean after the striker left the team of the team due to a thigh injury on Thursday.
Kean had the best season of his career and scored 19 Series A goals for Fiorentina, after he had not found the net in the previous campaign at Juventus.
The 25-year-old started both legs of the Italian Nations League quarterfinals against Germany in March and scored twice. Mateo Retegui, last season's top scorer in the Serie A, is expected to replace him in the team.
Italy, who is not eligible for the last two world cups, starts their group I qualifying campaign on Friday to Norway, before he hostt Moldova on Monday.
Spalletti has also lost midfielder Manuel Locatelli and defender Matteo Gabbia due to injuries, and Inter Milan defender Francesco Acerbi withdrew from the team on Sunday.
