‘Most Spurs set-piece imaginable’ – Maddison & Son caught in hilarious blunder

Tottenham fans managed to see the funny side of one of the worst free kick routines in the recent memory in their 1-0 defeat by AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League.

The Noord -Londers were beaten in the first stage of their last 16 draw from the Dutch side, thanks to a hugely unhappy Lucas Bergvall own goal in the first half, in the last blow to Postecoglou and Co.

It was a largely toothless representation of Spurs, who now all have to do it in the second stage to breathe new life into their hope for Champions League qualification.

Spurs, however, chase the game, had a big chance to come back with a free kick on the edge of the box.

James Maddison stood over the ball and made as if he wanted a crack on the goal before he played a disguised short pass to Captain Son Heung-Min.

But the return pass of the South Korean icon was too heavy and ended up behind the on-Rushing Maddison.

The touch of the English international back in Son was then played out of balance and therefore behind his teammate, making the Spurs-Schipper completely at sea, with three AZ defenders who close him.

Son then switches to Kevin Danso while Spurs already seems to revive the chance of the songs in the box before the set piece, but the ball from the middle in the danger area is too hit and drips from the game.

It was a disappointment for the Dutch hosts, but a movement that has largely encouraged the performance of Spurs on a disappointing European evening.

As such, it pulled the anger of a number of fans on social media, although they could laugh at the sad set piece.

A fan wrote: “I have to be the most conceivable Tottenham -free kick.”

Another repeated sentiment: “That free kick was the most tottenham that I've ever seen.”

A third posted a photo of a dartboard surrounded by darts, who had not entered the board.

And a fourth joke: “I can't believe that this wasn't actually generated.”

It is the newest disappointing result in a season of setbacks for Spurs, who struggled with injuries during the campaign.

As a result, they have not been able to build every form of momentum and form, which unfortunately influenced their campaign, with Postecoglou's side in the 13th, bound at 33 points with the 14th placed man United and West Ham in the 15th.

It was a thorough disappointing version, especially in view of this competition, the last hope of the club on silverware remains this period, and they have to do work to turn the draw in the second stage in North Londs.

“We will analyze it and look at the areas where we struggled, but it is honest to say that it was not nearly the level that it had to be,” Postecoglou said.

“It wasn't great of us tonight. Almost all facets of the game. We are not really grasping with part of the game. We struggled to get some momentum with the ball, we were not as aggressive as we had to be without the ball.

“I don't think it's a matter of effort or attitude. I don't think it goes outside and not trying, but, as I said, we didn't really get a grip and have the right mindset to tackle an away game in Europe.

'It is always difficult and we clearly admitted the goal, which was a disappointing set of events, but even after that we did not take the game at all.

“You're going to face some pressure when you play away from home in Europe and endure the storm and get a grip on it, but we never really did it that a disappointment was.”
