Motta urges Juventus to find consistency in winning

Thiago Motta highlighted the need for Juventus to put on a winning streak after recording more draws than any other Serie A team this season.

Juventus has had a mixed season so far. They are currently undefeated for only the third time after 18 league games. However, they are fifth in Serie A with eleven draws and twelve points behind leaders Napoli.

This weekend's match marks the 183rd Turin derby in all competitions since 1929-30 – since 2000, Juventus has lost just one of its 36 official matches against Torino (W27 D8).

Juve also kept three consecutive clean sheets against Torino in the league. They haven't recorded at least four straight shutouts since a streak of 10 between 2002 and 2014.

Motta insisted the team had improved under his leadership this season, but acknowledged they needed to start racking up more wins.

“It is essential for us to find continuity in our results. We must improve and do our best every day to achieve victory,” Motta told reporters on Friday.

“In these 26 games we have only lost twice [once in the Champions League and in the Supercoppa Italiana semi-final] with a very young team.”

Motta confirmed that Dusan Vlahovic, Juventus' top scorer in the league this season (seven), Francisco Conceicao, and the suspended Manuel Locatelli would not be available for the match against Torino, with Douglas Luiz possibly getting a chance in midfield.

Since joining Juventus from Aston Villa in June, the Brazilian has made just nine appearances in Serie A, including two starts. He has yet to register any goals or assists in the league, but has created nine chances in 294 minutes on the pitch.

“He [Douglas Luiz] is a high-level midfielder who can play in the three positions we use,” said Motta.

“He can score goals and make the final pass, he has creativity and he knows how to build up. He can perform more defensively, just like everyone else. He can take three positions and has freedom in a context.”

Motta also hinted that a new captain would be appointed, with veteran defender Danilo reportedly looking to leave the club.

“Without Manu [Locatelli]”You'll see who the captain is tomorrow,” Motta said.

“What counts is the recognition of the teammates. The coach observes and tries to show the right way to become a leader, especially by setting an example.

“There is always room for new leaders to develop.”
