Mourners including Eamonn Holmes arrive for funeral of Ballon d’Or-winning Man Utd star Denis Law

Mourners, including Eamonn Holmes, have arrived for the funeral of the legend Denis Law of Manchester United.

The last surviving member of the Holy Trinity of the Red Devils died on January 17 on January 8 after a fight with dementia.

The cortege of the former striker will leave the old Trafford Stadium of the club at 1.10 pm before finding his way to the Cathedral of Manchester for the funeral service.

TV -guest and United fan Holmes is one of those who have already arrived in the church.

The deeply driven family of the law said last month in a statement: “It is with a tough heart that we tell you that our Father Denis Law has unfortunately died. He has fought a tough battle, but in the end he is now in peace.

“We want to thank everyone who contributed to his welfare and care, past and much more recent.

“We know how many people supported and kept him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference. Thank you.”

Ballon d'Or Winner Law started his career in Huddersfield Town, had two spells in Manchester City and played for Torino in Italy.

But it was in Old Trafford from 1962-73, where he scored his name 237 goals in 404 games.

He won two titles with United and the FA Cup and helped them to the European Cup final of 1968 where they defeated Benfica, although they missed the match due to an injury.

Sir Bobby Charlton, Law and George Best were integral because the Red Devils are the first English side to win the European Cup.

Man you said in a statement: “Everyone at Manchester United mourns for the loss of Denis Law, the king of the Stretford End, who died, aged 84 years.

“With 237 goals in 404 performances, he will always be celebrated as one of the largest and most beloved players in the club.

“The ultimate target scorer, his flair, spirit and love for the game made him the hero of a generation.

“Our deepest condolences go to the Van Denis family and many friends. His memory will live on forever.”

Best, Law and Charlton together scored 665 goals in 1,636 games for the club.

And each won the Ballon d'Or between 1964-68 with Cristiano Ronaldo in 2008 the only United player who did it since then.

Tribute to 'De Koning'

Huddersfield Town, where Denis started his career, tributed and said: “Everything in Huddersfield Town is deeply sad to learn from taking over from Denis Law.

“A legend of not only our big club, but also an immortal of the sport as a whole, he will be deeply missed and his memory cherished by us all.

“Our collective thoughts are currently with Denis's family and loved ones.

“Ever a terrier, always a terrier”.

The football legend scored 30 goals in 55 games for Scotland, with the team trying in a post on X with the text: “A True Great.

“We will no longer see his preferences.”

The United Trio of David Beckham, Gary Neville and Wayne Rooney belonged to figures from all over the world of football to show their respect at the Scot.

Becks wrote on his Instagram page: “Tonight we lost a real Lord of the game. Our heart goes out to the Van Denis family.

“Our hearts are heavy last night. A legend on the field but the perfect gentleman.”

United's top all-time goal scorer Wayne Rooney called the star a “legend” in his tribute.

Gary Neville, who brought his entire career to Man you, said: “Rest in Vrede Denis. A great football player and a great man.

“It is a privilege and an honor to have spent time in your company – the king of the Stretford.”

Denis' ex-sizing teammate Brian Kidd added: “He was small, with the heart of a lion.

Alzheimer's wrestings

In 2021, the goal scorer revealed that he suffered from Alzheimer's in an emotional explanation.

He said he had experienced anger, frustration, confusion and fear because of the condition.

There has been a lot of research and debate about how much head the ball led to Alzheimer's for a number of ex -players.

The law said: “I am at the point where I feel that I want to be open about my condition.

“I have been diagnosed with 'mixed dementia', which is more than one type of dementia, in my case this is Alzheimer's and vascular dementia.

“It is an incredibly challenging and problematic disease and I witnessed many friends who have experienced this.

“You hope it won't happen to you, even make jokes about it while you ignore the early signs because you don't want it to be true.

“You get angry, frustrated, confused and then worried, worried about your family, because they are those who have to do with it.

“However, the time has come to tackle this head, excuse the pun.

“I recognize how my brain deteriorates and how my memory avoids me if I don't want to and how this causes me in situations that are outside of my control.

“I understand what is happening and that is why I want to tackle my situation now while I am able, because I know that there will be days that I do not understand and that I hate the thought.”
