MU fans say Liverpool purple patch is over realising they let Bergvall slip away

MANCHESTER UNITED supporters are furious after realizing they have missed out on wonderkid Lucas Bergvall.

The 18-year-old Swede scored a dramatic winner as Tottenham beat Liverpool 1-0 in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final on Wednesday.

Bergvall stayed calm late on and fired past Alisson to hand under-fire boss Ange Postecoglou a crucial win.

The teenage midfielder signed for Tottenham in a dramatic Deadline Day surge last January.

Spurs poached Bergvall's contract from Barcelona, signing him for £8.5 million from Swedish club Djurgarden.

But long before moving to north London, Bergvall had TWICE trials with Man Utd – once at the age of 14 and another at 16.

He was liked by scouts at the club but was unable to secure a contract at Old Trafford due to Brexit rules.

Under current FIFA rules, players under the age of 18 cannot be sold abroad, except to players within the European Economic Area.

As such, the midfielder remained in Sweden, playing first for IF Brommapojkarna and then for Djurgarden.

When the prodigy turned 18, Barcelona came knocking, but it was Spurs who sealed his signature.

Referring to the optimism following Sunday's 2-2 draw with Liverpool, another said with a crying emoji: “Liverpool purple patch over.”

While a third added, captioning a photo of Bergvall in United colours: “[His goal] this evening is proof that karma exists.”

And a fourth said: “Once red, always red.”

Bergvall gave Spurs the lead late on Wednesday evening after a tireless performance.

But Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk was furious that the Swede had not received a red card moments earlier.

The 18-year-old – already on yellow – jumped into a tackle and eliminated Kostas Tsimikas.

Referee Stuart Atwell played advantage but did not return to show the teenager a yellow card, while Tsimikas had to leave the field for treatment, temporarily reducing Liverpool to ten men.

Just minutes later, Bergvall scored from Dominic Solanke's cross to secure a crucial first-leg advantage for Tottenham.

A frustrated Van Dijk said after the match: “It was quite clear that there was going to be a second yellow, it was quite clear.

“A minute later he scores the winner.

“The referee made a mistake and I told him so. It was very clear and everyone on the sidelines knew it was yellow.

“He should have left the field. There is a linesman, fourth official, VAR and referee and he does not get a second yellow.

“I'm not saying that's why we lost, but it was a big moment.”
