Murphy: Newcastle must ‘keep the pressure on’ to earn Champions League spot

Jacob Murphy dreams of winning more silverware with Newcastle United, but said that his teammates should keep the pressure in the Race for Champions League football.

Murphy was part of the team that ended the 70-year waiting time of Newcastle for a trophy after beating Liverpool in the EFL Cup final in Wembley last month.

And the side of Eddie Howe has continued their beautiful form since that day and achieved a fourth victory in their last five Premier League matches in the King Power Stadium.

Murphy scored twice in the first 11 minutes to control the visitors before former Leicester -Man Harvey Barnes sealed the victory before the break.

Indeed, 14 van Murphy's 16 Premier League -targeted involvement for Newcastle this season have come since the beginning of December (seven goals, seven assists).

At that time, only Liverpool's Mohamed Salah (28) and teammate of Newcastle Alexander Isak (19) have more at the time.

And while Murphy took the time to think about the Newcastle trophy parties from their EFL Cup victory, he said that the focus was shifted to finish at the Champions League places.

“You can see why the big ones become addicted to winning trophies,” said Murphy. It has been incredible. The bus tour was not of this world …

“We want to keep striving for better and tasting it again.

“It is extremely important to us. We can see other English teams doing very well. We tasted it last season. We now have eight games to go, no other distractions.

“I think we can really have a challenge for the teams around us, one game that can all change, so we have to keep the pressure on.”

The magpies, now fifth, are on points with Chelsea above them, after they played a match less, because the prospect of Champions League football in St. James' park will become increasingly likely next season.

Howe repeated Murphy's comments and praised his team to keep their focus despite the euphoria to win their long -awaited first honor.

“That was the biggest challenge for us. I can't compliment them [the players] enough. They are a very sober, modest group that wants to do well and represents the club in the right way.

“They have shown that in recent weeks.”

Howe also remained realistic when he was asked about the qualification of the Champions League, however, which emphasizes the difficulty of the next three games of his party.

They are confronted with Manchester United and in form Crystal Palace at home, before a trip to Aston Villa, all within the room of six days.

“It's going to come up. The next week for us is a big week. We have three really tough matches and that will go a long way to see where we are at the end of the season,” he added.

“We are in a better position than we were, but there is still a lot of work to do.”
