Napoli midfielder McTominay: I rarely played in best position at Man Utd

United sold McTominay to Napoli in August, where the Scotland International flourished in Italy under coach Antonio Conte.

Thinking about his time with United, he said the athletics: “When I came to the first team, I was pretty misunderstanding where I was playing,” he said. “It was not the fault of coaches. My strengths have always been in the box, goals scored, being a problem there.

“But I was used as a no. 6, or as a center-back, and that has never really been my game. But if you play for Manchester United and you are 20, you can't knock on the door of the manager and say that you expect to play on no 8 for Paul Pogba. It is not realistic.

“You have to know your place and do what you are asked. In the past few seasons I started to get into the box a little more, to score more goals, and then last year was my best.”

Mctominay continued: “They would always sign someone who would not necessarily be what people expected. My mentality was that I was always there, ready to go, ready to grab my chance.

“I have always wanted to prove my value to show that I could play every game. It is not the kind of things that influences me. You can only have control over what you do.”
