Napoli president De Laurentiis talks up Conte after title triumph

Goals from Scott McTominay and Romelu Lukaku achieved Napoli winning on Cagliari to confirm them as Serie A title winners.

The Laurentiis said to Dazn: 'I now feel relieved.

“Saying four is a good number, it's not easy. We hope it is the start of a consistency that we are trying to bring from northern Italy to the south. It was not easy, but when I (Antonio) met Conte in the Maldives and many years ago we went swimming, I was beaten by his mentality.

“I approached him in November 2023 and asked him to come right away, but he said very professionally that he had not built that team, so it was best to wait until June, so then we could do something very special together.

“He did it, so I take my hat for him.”

Coy on Conte's future

About the future of title -winning coach Antonio Conte, the Laurentiis was cautious considering some reports of tension between the couple.

“Never say never,” he went on. “Coaches have their own character that should be respected and in my opinion you should never oblige them under iron contracts.

“Napoli is Napoli, it deserves respect. If he wants to make himself available to the club as he did this season, we say welcome, we are ready to follow him as a great leader.

“Next year I would be very satisfied if he had left his mark in the Champions League, which, since they have adjusted the size, has become more important.”
