Atletico Madrid would like to continue to strengthen their defense this summer after the addition of Matteo Ruggeri and seem to have identified Renato Veiga as one of the options at the top of their priority list. However, an agreement with Chelsea can take some time.
The 21-year-old Portuguese defender seems to be on his way to Stamford Bridge this summer, while looking for First Team Football. Bayern Munich and a public Premier League side have also shown interest in Veiga, but the links have been the strongest with Atletico.
The first reports in the course of the past few days seemed to suggest that an agreement was close by, with Atletico reporting to offer € 35 million for Veiga. The requirements of Chelsea would be a total reimbursement of € 40 million, albeit that variables could include.
However, Marca explains that although Veiga is a player atletico and is on their shortlist to strengthen their defense, they consider the price tag of € 40 million as excessive. It is also noted that Los Colchoneros still has to submit a formal selection of Chelsea – although this is usually the case until a price has been agreed.
Atletico, however, has the feeling that he would be a smart addition, given his potential. Veiga is at 191 cm (6'3), is powerful and has pace to burn, giving him the raw attributes to physically tackle some of the best attackers. Able to play on left-back and in the central midfield, his versatility is another argument for his signing, especially with Diego Simeone who often flashes between a rear four and a back three.
For his part, Veiga is said to be happy to draw for Atletico. He has given the green light for a movement, and although mixed reports have been agreed or personal conditions have been agreed or not, it seems that the two parties are not far apart.
