Nemanja Matic given two-game ban for covering Ligue 1’s anti-homophobia badge

Lyon's Nemanja Matic has received a ban from two games after dealing with an anti-homophobia message on his shirt.

The former Chelsea and Man Utd midfielder covered the anti-homophobia-badge on the sleeve of his shirt when he came up as a replacement during Lyon's 2-0 home victory on Angers on the last day of the Ligue 1-season on 17 May.

Le Havre striker Ahmed Hassan has received the same prohibition, whereby the incident takes place during the 3-2 victory on his side in Strasbourg.

Ligue 1 has published the pair with Twee-Match Bans and another two suspended matches, and both players have been agreed to participate in “in an awareness campaign about the fight against homophobia in football” within six months, according to a statement from the French top flight.

The Matic contract with Lyon is at the end of June and he has to agree on new conditions with the French club.

Ligue 1 conducts an annual campaign that asks players to wear rainbow -colored images and sees banners in stadiums.

There has been resistance in recent years, in which some players quoted personal or religious reasons to unsubscribe.

Nantes Striker Mostafa Mohamed refused to appear in the last game of this season because of his beliefs as a Muslim, but has escaped every ban.

About why he chose to avoid the initiative, Mohamed wrote on Instagram: “Living together also means that this diversity can be expressed differently from one person to another,” he wrote on social media.

“I believe in mutual respect – the respect that we owe others, but also the respect that we owe ourselves and our beliefs. As far as I am concerned, there are deep -rooted values bound by my heritage and my faith, who participate in this initiative.”
