Neville admits he’s been left ‘stunned’ by Liverpool’s ‘unbelievable’ season

Gary Neville admitted that he was surprised by Liverpool this season and described the side of Arne Slot as 'incredible'.

Liverpool defeated Rivals Everton 1-0 on Wednesday evening thanks to a goal from Diogo Jota.

In the result, Liverpool moved 12 points free of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League with eight more games.

United Legend Neville stated that he thought Liverpool would experience a 'drop -off' last year after the departure of Jurgen Klopp.

However, Liverpool has been enormously impressive and has won 22 league games this season and scored 70 goals in the process – by far the most in the division.

Neville also rejected the suggestions that Liverpool's defeat against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup -Final or their elimination of the Champions League could shine the sparkle of their expected competition triumph.

Neville said on Sky Sports: 'I am stunned about where Liverpool is. I don't think we can rewrite and say history because they have lost the Carabao Cup final because they have gone from Europe, this is a half-disappointing season. This is an incredible season. '

Neville emphasized the differences between Klopp and Slot and stated that the latter deserves enormous praise for the impact he has made.

'To take over Jurgen Klopp, a huge personality and character who was loved in some ways outside of Liverpool -fans, you thought there would just be a drop -off. Everyone thought there would be a drop -off, I certainly did that.

'I thought there was no way to respond to those Liverpool players the same thing to a manager you had been so used to.

“Slot, because he is the absolute contradiction of Klopp in terms of his calmness, his flexibility, his calmness, he just seems to be perfect in terms of what Liverpool needed this season and you have to give it to everyone who has appointed him, but also to the manager and the players.”

Neville added that Liverpool will now know that they are almost champions after overcoming Everton.

Neville said: 'It was not spectacular from Liverpool, but that was not the most important tonight, they were really professional, especially after they scored the goal that I thought they were excellent.

'They did that a few times this season, where they have kept the ball really good, managed the game. Tonight they will go to that dressing room knowing that they are almost there and it is about making sure that they do not make mistakes now. '

Liverpool returns to action on Sunday when they get away against Fulham.

The Slot team only needs 13 points to be crowned champion.
