Neville & Carragher pick EPL teams of the season and make 2025 predictions

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have picked their Premier League teams from the season so far and made their predictions for 2025.

During the final Monday Night Football of the year – which saw Manchester United defeated by Newcastle – Sky Sports experts picked their best teams of the 2024/25 season so far.

Neville and Carragher also reflected on their predictions from the start of the season and now update their picks for Premier League champions, relegated teams and more on May 25.

Read on to find out who they picked and why…

Gary Neville's team of the season

“I had a hard time with the left back. But Josko Gvardiol has scored four goals, he is always a threat.

“He is the one who is played constantly and if I were to choose a team now and I was thinking about building a back four, he would be the player I would use as a left back.

“He's a goal threat, he does his job quite well as a left back. City are giving goals where left, right and centre, I understand that at the moment. It's not usual for them, it's not usual for him.”

“Because William Saliba plays as a right central defender and he is just ahead, I looked at the numbers this morning, it was one of the [him and Gabriel]. It hasn't been the best start to the season for Arsenal, but defensively they are still strong and he is still excellent. So he was the obvious choice to play with [Virgil] Van Dyke.

“The more I look at Trent Alexander-Arnold, I think his defense has improved a lot. He has better intensity in his defense, I'm not saying he's perfect, but I think he has a much better attitude towards compared to his defense than I have.” I think he has improved enormously in the last 12 months and what he is doing with the ball is remarkable.”

Jamie Carragher's team of the season

“Nikola Milenkovic is almost like the Van Dijk of Nottingham Forest. Gary went for Saliba, you had a fight between Saliba and Gabriel for me. I was actually very close to using Gabriel for the defensive record, but also because he is the most talked about person.” -about the defender in the competition, based on what he does at set pieces. But I just feel what Nottingham Forest are doing defensively, a lot of it is about that.

“Ola Aina plays right back and left back. Every time I see him he does that job on both sides, and every time I look at him I look at him and think he could play for a team that expects in to play at the top.” Champions League every season.

“It's the defensive side that really impresses me, so I felt like I had to bring in two of their defenders.”

Predictions for 2025: Arsenal and Liverpool chosen as PL champions

Neville on choosing Arsenal as Premier League champions over Liverpool…

“Liverpool are huge favorites and are in great form but there is still a long way to go. Arsenal have been through the mill in recent years, they have gone all the way and sometimes when you win your first title it's not the case.” happen in the most expected way.

“It strikes me that if Van Dijk gets injured, it's a completely different story. If Arsenal can close the gap to six points on Wednesday, that could close very quickly if Van Dijk [was injured] – he's such a great player for them.

'They have proven that they can live without Alisson, who was just as important a few years ago, but now with [Caoimhin] Kelleher supports him, they arranged that. They have options for the future – [Mohamed] Salah would be a blow because he is world class, but he is [Diogo] Jota, [Cody] Gakpo, [Darwin] Nunez.

“And when they all score they seem equally happy for each other and that's a worrying sign for the rest. They all buy into each other and there's something between them as players.

“It's against Arsenal at the moment and they're hanging in there. They're the only team that can beat Liverpool.

“Arsenal are resilient, they have four back players who can keep things together and get through games and I think they will attack better in the next part of the season. If they can get close towards the end, they could push Liverpool .”

Neville and Aston Villa finish fifth…

“If Aston Villa go out of the Champions League in February or March, Unai Emery is the type to really get them going towards the end of the season and they will finish strongly to get that fifth spot.”

Carragher at Newcastle finished fifth…

“Newcastle don't have the European situation, they could go one step further in the Carabao Cup. Villa just don't quite get going, they win a game, then they lose one, or they draw. They should have won. It seems like Newcastle have come into form and looking at their midfield [Alexander] Isak up front, it looks pretty special.”

Carragher at Nottingham Forest finished sixth…

“Most people, even Nottingham Forest, would expect the teams we have in the top four to finish above them.

“They currently have a significant lead with only half a season left. If they can come close to what they have achieved, they can make things very difficult for those teams.”

Carragher on the relegation battle…

“I've been worried about Leicester since Ruud van Nistelrooy came on, even though some results were good and the performances were good against Manchester City. But Leicester have had to concede a lot of chances and shots, big chances in all respects.” games they have played, except Man City.

“Because they expect to stay, there can be negativity at times and they have already changed the manager. Ipswich won their third game of the season against Chelsea but there is still the feel-good factor. If they have a few bad get results, they have 'They won't get down on themselves too much, whereas at Leicester the crowd can become quite negative.'
