New Matildas coach Joe Montemurro has revealed that Sam Kerr is forced to undergo a second surgical 'intervention' on a new mysterious injury.
Details about the nature of the fresh injury are still unclear, however, channel 10, reports that the 31-year-old new mother returned to Australia to undergo surgery to tackle the case.
Eyebrows were also raised after Kerr was seen at the Women's A-League Grand Final last month. It was also the same weekend that Chelsea will take on Manchester United in the FA Cup final of Women's FA in Wembley, and a week after her fiancé, Kristie Mewis, their son, Jagger, gave birth.
It comes as a huge blow to the Aussie -Superster who did not play for Club or Land in 16 months after having torn her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in 2024 during a training camp with Chelsea.
She would later undergo surgery on the ACL Teacher and was trained again at the beginning of the year on grass with the Sonia Bompastor side.
After the official confirmation of his appointment on Monday, Montemurro stated that he will not make an official call about the future of Kerr as captain of Australia, until she returns to play.
Bompastor had also refused to be attracted when Kerr could return, the blues boss stated that her injury time was still unclear.
However, the former Lyon manager, Montemurro, has explained that Kerr is now training on grass, after he has undergone the surgical procedure while she revealed that her knee injury was much better.
“Look, I think there were some complications and I only caught up the scenario for the past 24 hours,” he explained to Channel 10 News, when he was pressed for an update about Kerr.
“There was a next intervention, but I do believe that she is now running again.
'I think it was something completely different (than the existing knee injury). I think the knee is fine.
“I think there were other problems, but again, I was only informed for the past 24 hours.”
Montemurro also confirmed that Mary Fowler had to be fit and shoots for next year's Women's Asian Cup.
There were concern that the 22-year-old would not come back in time for the tournament in March.
But Montemurro was happy with how she recovered after also undergoing surgery on an ACL injury that she sustained while playing for Manchester City in their Women's FA Cup Semi-final defeat against Rivals Manchester United.
“My intention is to sit down with all players, even the extensive team, and to map a process of what is needed to play the football brand that we want to play from a physical and a mental perspective,” Montemurro said.
Speaking at Fowler, he added: 'Mary is a special player and I can tell you from a club perspective, she is in the eyes of many big clubs.
'It's a shame for her, it happens, but she is probably in the best environment with the city group.
'From a physical and from a training tax (perspective) and from a return to play scenario, she is right.
“Hopefully she is right for the Asian cup.”
