Newcastle 2-1 Brentford: Tonali scores freak winner as Isak sets new record

Alexander the Great continued his crusade to surpass Alan Shearer, but it was the Italian stallion of Newcastle that Brentford defeated.

Sandro Tonali's Piledriver from Wide Breide caught Mark Flekken and kept Toon hot on the tail of Manchester City in Manchester.

And that came without new legendary striker Alexander Isak even on the field at that time.

While the 25-year-old still has a way to catch up with Super Al's Club record 206 goals, Newcastle's sensational Swede has now achieved another achievement that the legend could not.

Fresh from ending the waiting of the Magpies since 1969 for silverware, Isak is now the first Newcastle player to score in successive Premier League campaigns after his opener 20-plus.

Brentford, six games unbeaten on the road, threatened to spoil the pleasure after Bryan Mbeumo equalized with a penalty to Tonali's moment of magic.

It was another party atmosphere on Tyneside in advance when the winners of the Carabao Cup returned for the first time since those Wembley Triumph.

And only a few days after an estimated 300,000 attended the trophy parade, the Toon Army still had a trick in store to mark their 70-year-old big trophy-dry.

A huge flag of Newcastle's now legendary boss was unraveled in the pre-match of Gallowgate End, in addition to the message: “Eddie Howe Histie Made”.

Humble Howe clapped in appreciation, but he and his players know that there is an even greater price for the taking.

He admitted that Newcastle's biggest obstacle to overcome was their own inconsistency in the search for the qualification of Champions League.

And after he had mentioned the same start XI that Liverpool had overthrown in the final, his men roared into action.

They opened Brentford in just the second minute in an almost dream start.

Joelinton failed to Tino Livramento, the full-back hit a man and drives a cross to the rear pole.

Isak raced in to meet it, although the usual deadly hotshot could not find the target from six meters under pressure.

Joelinton dragged a shot wide as the pressure went before Isak was working on it again.

Jacob Murphy stole the ball of Ethan Pinnock in the Brentford half and the tone striker jumped like a lion.

He broke forward, freed himself from the defense and was cleaned by just leaving 20 meters.

However, the bees had endured the early storm and it soon became clear that the Thomas Frank team was not only here to frustrate and to place a cork in the Celebration Champers Cup.

They came here looking for a sixth consecutive victory and started to go toe with the hosts.

Bryan Mbeumo shot a wide of the edge of the area before Kieran Trippier's Back Post declaring the cross of the Brentford Winger Kevin Damage to nod in.

Harvey Barnes tried the other end on the other end, after he had cut in from the left, but was looking for his fierce beaten strike along the wrong side of the distant pole.

Fabian Schar's piledriver led from the thigh of Isak from the thigh, while the magpies tried to move through the gears again before peace.

And they thought they had found a breakthrough in the last seconds when Isak danced beyond the defense and Feeded Barnes to finish in an empty net – but the wing player had wandered off.

Just as it looked like a tense team talk from Howe, his magic man stepped up.

This time he took advantage of a slip from his Marker Mbeumo to guide Murphy's Cross past Mark Flekken for his 24th campaign.

Barnes shot wide after the break and then Murphy hesitated after stealing the ball and continuing.

Caught in two spirits or they had to pass or shoot, his final effort was blocked, just like Barnes' follow-up and Brentford immediately launched a counter.

Bruno Guimaraes blocked one attempt when the Magpies struggled to erase the danger and eventually they were punished after a few seconds.

Goalie Nick Pope from Newcastle came out to prevent Yoane Wissa from met a pass over the top and steered the Congolese bait.

The referee pointed directly to the spot and after a VAR check, Mbeumo quietly sent Pope in the wrong direction.

Howe reacted by replacing Isak and Murphy with Callum Wilson and Joe Willock, but it was the bees that almost a little later took the lead.

A corner came in from the left and Pinnock was the most only jumped to see painfully how his header touched the inside of the post and bounced into pace hands.

Newcastle seemed to fluctuate with accusations from a Wembley -Kater to be thrown at them – but Tonali had other ideas.

Barnes put it on his path along the right wing, and the EX-AC Milan-Aas of the Eagle meant every piece of it when he saw the gap and a thunderous strike within the nearby pole of Flekken.

Deep in the eight -minute extra time, the bees had a last chance to deliver an angel, but replaced Mikkel Damsgaard high in the Gallowgate.

The DANE then went down after bone having guimaraes, but despite the pleeklys from Brentford, the fine calls were thrown away.
