Newcastle 4-1 Man United – PLAYER RATINGS: How did teenager Harry Amass fare?

Harvey Barnes saved twice for Newcastle in a dominant victory over Manchester United on Sunday, the Magpies land a huge blow in the race for Champions League football with a 4-1 victory.

Sandro Tonali opened the score with a first finish after a delicious assist from Alexander Isak, while the hosts tore the leadership with 24 minutes on the clock in an early blow to United.

However, it did not take long, with Alejandro Garnacho restoring parity 13 minutes later to send the two parties at the break level.

But it was Newcastle that screamed the game at the neck, and Barnes was twice on the score sheet – the second time he took advantage of an unfortunate slip from Noussair Mazraoui – to send the magpies to three huge points.

Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes then added insult to injury after a hobe from Altay Bayindir – Andre Onana replaced – by playing a simple fourth goal with 14 minutes to play.

Here the Nathan Salt from Mail Sport takes you through the players who shins the brightest, and those who leave St James' Park know that they could have contributed more.

Newcastle (4-3-3)

Nick Pope – 6.5

Made a brilliant reaction, except that he denied Joshua Zirkzee to make it 1-0 early, but in reality he had little to do afterwards.

Kieran Trippier – 6

Taken a nasty blow of a challenge from Bruno Fernandes, but managed to shake it off to alleviate any fear of injury. Went fairly quietly around his company on a day that was all about those for him – and he won't mind.

Fabian Schar – 6

Targeted young Harry gathered on set pieces, but did not become much joy against the teenager.

In the early moments it seemed to have a busy afternoon, but they were fleeting and this game soon became beautiful and simple for those in black and white.

Dan Burn – 6.5

His size advantage is a nightmare assignment for most teams and Manchester United had no answer here, even when he matte him next to Joshua Zirkzee. Was a total nuisance with each set piece.

Tino Livramento – 7

Had a very quiet first half, but you just knew with his talent that it wouldn't take. Sheen clear in the second when he was able to walk off the left wing, giving both Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui a headache. It was his row and cross that led to the second goal.

Sandro Tonali – 8

Goals are always a part of the game of a midfielder where coaches want more and Tonali again show that he can dominate both ends of the field. His volley here to make the score on 1-0 was his third goal in his last five games for Club and Country. Assisted attack for a brilliant all-round display.

Bruno Guimaraes – 6.5

Is always able to fight and his fight against Bruno Fernandes was a good one – and one that he finally decreased. The afternoon ended with one of the easiest goals he is offered this season.

Joelinton – 6

The ball was wiped too easily by Manuel Ugarte the moment the equal goal of Manchester United started. But he did not allow that to define the game and it was his consciousness and movement that Bayindir confused to make a mistake that Joelinton Tee Guimaraes saw for 4-1.

Jacob Murphy – 7

A brilliant strike just widely bore in the early exchanges, but is always a willing runner and that brought off his fruit when he was not marked at the back post to meet Livramento's Cross, who stood Harvey Barnes on a tap-in. Up to 19 target contributions and this season and with England Baas Thomas Tuchel in the stands, he did his case no harm here at all.

Alexander Isak – 7.5

There was so much attention on his goals that it was almost as if Manchester United forgot what a good maker he can be. His cut ball over the top was a wonderful assist for Tonali. Isak has now provided six assists in the Premier League this season, his joints are most in a single competition campaign in his career. Some of his touches to turn away from markers are fascinating.

Harvey Barnes – 8.5

Noussair Mazraoui gave the runaround and he received his rewards when he got a tap-in to bring the score to 2-1 thanks to a weak defense of Manchester United. The attack continued as he robbed Mazraoui in possession before he finished with Aplomb for 3-1. His relief spoke to the fact that these were his first goals in St James' Park since 1 September.

Manager: Jason Tindall – 7.5

Cut a lively figure on the touchline while he filled in for Eddie Howe, who missed the game after he was taken to the hospital on Saturday. Deserves the honor of elevating his team to another level during the break after Manchester United had found a route back to the competition.

Subs

Callum Wilson (for Alexander Isak, 78)

Anthony Gordon (for Jacob Murphy, 78)

Emil Krafth (for Kieran Trippier, 78)

Lewis Miley (for Bruno Guimaraes, 85)

Sean Longstaff (for Joelinton, 85)

Manchester United (3-4-2-1)

Altay Bayindir – 4.5

Replacing a keeper who made two major mistakes that led to goals in the midweek and have submitted their own mistake to donate Bruno Guimaraes and Newcastle, united their fourth goal. Had a strong first half, but faded and shipped four on his Premier League debut.

Noussair Mazraoui – 4

His head even turned in front of his disastrous slip, so Barnes could clearly run to score at 3-1, but that exposed exactly why he is no more than an improvised option as the center. Never looks comfortable from the moment it started.

Victor Lindelof – 5

Come in to replace Harry Maguire in the middle of the back three and this was a mixed display. Although there were moments of promise, this was largely frustrating.

Was not tight enough for his Swedish countryman Isak in the movement for the first goal, while he noticed that he marked no one when Barnes tapped the second in the six-year box. Too easy to run for the third.

Leny Yoro – 5

Yoro started brighter than Lindelof, but this was a display below the level at which he knows he can play. Lost Tonali out of sight, who got the run on him to make it 1-0, and had no idea where Barnes was for the second. Was easily passed by for the third. The 19-year-old showed his leadership skills when he stood up for Harry Amass in his duel with Schar. Booked.

Diogo Dalot – 6.5

Has quietly improved the week after week. Brilliant Rijrun on the countertop set United Free then under the Cosh and he had the calm to place it on the path of Alejandro Garnacho to score on 1-1. Only Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo have more Premier League assists for United than the Portuguese this season.

Manuel Ugarte – 5.5

Many of his mistakes are strengthened more than his better moments, but he deserves the honor of robbing Joelinton van Owners to generate the counterattack for the equalizer at 1-1. There were really clear moments, but they were overshadowed. Must find a way to offer better protection to a vulnerable defense. Booked.

Christian Eriksen – 5

Only made three passes in the last third part in the first 45 minutes in harmony with Eriksen's style to keep things easy. Can't affect games as he could in his younger days, but keeps tapping things.

Harry Amass – 6

The 18-year-old was in the deep for his first Premier League start, but he was aware of Murphy and Trippier. This was a robust view that argued his decision to stay and to fight for his place, instead of leaving loan, in January. A star for the future.

Bruno Fernandes – 5.5

The jewel in the crown of Manchester United – but even he could not mask the defensive mistakes that made him massively in the second half. Almost an astonishing assist produced for Joshua Zirkzee with a one -off step in the first time, but his influence decreased when this match slipped away.

Alejandro Garnacho – 6.5

Close with deadly precision to rank against the Run of Play and brought his count to 10 goals for the season. United always offers a threat to the counterattack, but his early replacement was a message that the competition for places is fierce now that Mason Mount is fit again.

Joshua Zirkzee – 6

Would prefer to play if one of the No. 10s, but made sure that he crossed his body over the line as no 9 of United, with Rasmus Hojlund fell on the couch. Crying shame that his afternoon was demolished, only seven minutes in the second half when he pulled his hamstring.

Manager: Ruben Amorim – 4.5

His side collapsed in the second half, who undo the good work that they have done lately, especially away. Knowed that his season will take to Europe, that's why he rested Harry Maguire … But this was another underlining of the gap between Manchester United and the top four of the Premier League.

Subs

Rasmus Hojlund (for Joshua Zirkzee, 55) – 5

Patrick Dorgu (for Harry Amass, 55) – 5

Mason Mount (for Alejandro Garnacho, 55) – 6

Luke Shaw (for Noussair Mazraoui, 79)

Kobbie Mainoo (for Bruno Fernandes, 82)
