Newcastle 4-1 Man Utd: Magpies thrash Devils to reach 4th, Barnes scores brace

Harvey Barnes scored twice to send Newcastle United in the Premier League with a 4-1 win over Manchester United in St. James' Park.

Match report

A dominant Newcastle, whose boss Eddie Howe was absent for illness, saw a Joelinton target not allowed for offside in the first minute, after Kieran Trippier wandered past the last man before he played the cross.

However, they took a deserved lead through Sandro Tonali, who kept an eye on Alexander Isak's film to meet it on the volley.

Alejandro Garnacho restored parity with a separate goal for the break. Diogo Dalot drove through midfield before he set up the Argentinian to put it through the legs of Fabian Schar.

But Barnes came forward with two goals in the 15 -minute space after the break and tapped his first in an empty just before he drilled in a second with a powerful effort after Noussair Mazraoui had slipped.

An error from Altay Bayindir – who replaced the besieged Andre onana in the goal of United – enabled Newcastle to add more shine in the 77th minute.

The goalkeeper's attempt to play from the back was blocked by Joelinton, who subsequently selected Bruno Guimaraes to slots in their fourth.

Newcastle is now one point behind the third placed Nottingham Forest, with a competition in the hand of the teams around them, while United falls in 14th place under Everton on target difference.
