Neymar takes aim at PSG fans and claims their ‘unfair’ treatment of him

Neymar has criticized the treatment by PSG fans, in response to his former club's supporters.

The Brazilian was signed by the Parisian for a world record $198 million in 2017 and has scored 118 goals and provided 77 assists in 173 appearances for the club. The 32-year-old's six-year stay in the French capital would normally go down in history as a resounding success.

Neymar won five French titles, three French Cups and was routinely regarded as one of the best players in the world in his time. But given the side's failure to achieve the ultimate goal of winning the Champions League – a goal made even more difficult by his regular end-of-season injuries – his contribution is often downplayed.

As he looks to rediscover his best form after returning from injury with Saudi Pro League team Al-Hilal, the forward has addressed the criticism he received from PSG supporters, insisting that 'it wasn't really fair'.

“The first year in Paris was amazing,” he said on RMC's Bartoli Time podcast. 'I was very well received by the fans, but the last two or three years have not been the same. It wasn't really fair how I was treated.

Last May, fans were filmed outside the club's headquarters shouting for the board to resign, before further clips showed a group of supporters visiting the former Barcelona star's home and calling on him to move on.

PSG condemned the actions of their supporter, describing the behavior of a 'small group of individuals' as 'intolerable and insulting'.

'For me they crossed a line. Our relationship was no longer respectful, even though I always respected them. It was a very complicated situation. I was sad about the way they ended up treating me.”

Neymar's ties with the fans were finally severed in August 2023 when he completed a £78 million transfer to the Riyadh-based team.

Despite his clashes with some of the club's fans, the striker insisted he still harbored affection towards the club, just “a little bit of resentment” towards some supporters and those in charge.

He added: 'I respect PSG and will always support them so that they can achieve the best possible results. I have no grudge against the club, I just have a bit of grudge against the people who run the club and some of the fans.

“Unfortunately, my relationship with the fans is one of the saddest moments. That is in the past and I have a clear conscience about it.'
