Nico Williams joins Athletic Club squad for Liverpool trip

Athletic Club landed in Liverpool in the coming days prior to the last stage of their preseason campaign.

The Side of Eresto Valverde will be confronted twice against the current Premier League champions on 4 August as part of a double header that is designed to increase the readiness of both Squadron for the 2025/26 campaign.

The Basque Giants are preparing for a Crunch season, after his return to the UEFA Champions League and the holding of another Barcelona offer for starman Nico Williams.

Williams was chased by the Catalan giants for the second summer running, but despite the trust of Barcelona about a deal, the move unraveled in a spectacular way, while Williams again chose to stay in Bilbao and the 22-year-old finally chose to sign a new 10-year contract in the Baske Land.

Keeping Williams is seen as a large coup for Ernesto Valverde, where the experienced coach rather rejects rumors about the Transfersaga as a distraction for his team.

“The summer transfer market teaches us that many things are popping up, but you never know what will happen”, according to Marca.

“I didn't stop thinking about whether Nico would be here or not. It was like last year, but without any drama. In the end, Nico remains and we are happy with his decision.

“Now we have to put all that sound aside and go back to work.”

Valverde has appointed a team of 30 men for the trip to Merseyside from where his team will also travel to Noord-London to face Arsenal in the Emirates Cup on August 9.

Athletic Club has won only one match and has so far lost three in the preseason, with an opening victory in Ponferradina followed by losses for Alaves, PSV Eindhoven and Racing Santander.

The La Liga campaign starts at home on August 17 for Valverde near Rivals Sevilla in the Estadio San Mames.
