Nike decision could see €1.5m of Barcelona’s money down the drain

Barcelona have agreed to sign a new deal with Nike this winter, extending their sponsorship deal for an additional decade until 2038. However, the first half of the year was spent exploring opportunities with other brands.

The idea of possibly producing their own kits was also explored, with the Blaugrana producing around 150,000 shirts. Radio Catalunya says the shirts cost around €10 each to produce, but now the Catalan club are unsure what to do with them.

They need Nike's permission to sell them or even give them away to members, putting their €1.5 million investment at serious risk. Nike is the sole producer of official Barcelona kits and will understandably want to protect that position, but if they stop Barcelona from using or releasing the kits then Barcelona will have wasted €1.5 million.

Naturally, an additional 150,000 Barcelona kits could impact Nike's official kit sales. However, at the same time it would be a terrible waste of money and resources.
