As the end of the calendar year approaches and celebrations are prepared, we assess the offensive exploits on the Old Continent.
As 2024 draws to a close, the best football in the world continues with matches from the Premier League and Serie A. Yet FC Barcelona stands above the rest in one crucial category: ending the year as the team with the most goals in the European top 5 leagues.
According to OptaJose, the Catalan side finished 2024 with 96 goals, surpassing clubs such as Bayern Munich (92), Inter Milan (89), Arsenal (89) and Real Madrid (89). Barcelona's attacking prowess, led by Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha Dias, Lamine Yamal and others, has made them the most lethal offense in the major European leagues of the calendar year.
Barça's year of scoring dominance
With LaLiga EA Sports and the Bundesliga on a winter break, Barcelona, Madrid and Bayern will not replenish their numbers before the year ends. Meanwhile, following their 1-0 win over Ipswich Town on Boxing Day, Arsenal will resume action on January 1, 2025 against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.
The only team to recently improve their scoring record was Simone Inzaghi's Inter Milan, who scored three goals in the match against Cagliari. This performance took the Nerazzurri level with Arsenal and Madrid to 89 goals for the year.
Lewandowski and Raphinha: Barcelona's leading men
Barcelona's performance is in large part due to Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha Dias, who led the team's attacking attack in 2024.
As the team heads into 2025 under Hansi Flick, Lewandowski and Raphinha will be more critical than ever. Barcelona will need their firepower to regain momentum in Spain and remain competitive in the new format of Europe's premier club competition.
