Liverpool suffered a heartbreaking exit from Champions League when Paris Saint-Germain won in the night before they earned their place in the quarterfinals via a penalty shootout.
Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones remained destroyed after missing successive Spotkicks when Gianluigi Donnarumma turned out to be decisive in the draw.
While Liverpool started the game on the forefoot, PSG was able to punish them on the counter. The exchange of Ousmane Dembele with Bradley Barcola saw the former wing player of Barcelona score his 29th goal of the season to bring the French side back to a level.
Dominik Szoboszlai was refused a goal at the start of the second period, after Diogo Jota was deemed to have been offside much earlier in the construction of the game. After they have been still to the opening goal of their opponent, the Reds felt their way back to the game.
Trent Alexander-Arnold was forced by injury to the field, but the forward ambitions of Liverpool had not declined. They could not find a way and extra time was required. Donnarumma and Alisson Becker stood in the extra 30 minutes for a long time and ensured that penalties were needed to determine the draw.
PSG was perfect from the place to leave Anfield stunned when Donnarumma saved from Darwin and Jones. Desire Doue took the winning strike to send his side. Mirror Football takes a look at the talk points to arise from the collision.
Are we going again?
What do they say about doing the same and expecting different results? Well, both parties started the same XIs as under a week ago in Paris. Arne Slot, however, was curious whether PSG could repeat the performance standard.
“To play the same kind of football for PSG as last week – I am curious to see if they can,” he said before the game. “It was no surprise how she [ Liverpool players] acted last week. The last two to three months they have played man-to-man and it makes it difficult to enter the rhythm with the ball.
“We have to be more aggressive than last week without the ball. The many moments we can hurt them with the counterattack that we have to play that better than last week.”
It was not long to see that the pattern of the game would be different with the Reds much more on the front foot. Anfield undoubtedly offered a lot of encouragement.
And of course Ousmane Dembele quickly scored against the game. Both parties are apparently much flexible in what they can offer and it was a draw between two elite sides that in some respects reflected the first stage instead of producing a copy.
A penalty shootout was the only way to separate them.
Ousmane Dembele reborn
For many, the story of Ousmane Dembele was of what could have been, were the injuries he sustained during Barcelona. On 27, with PSG, the Frenchman seems to realize that the potential he was advertised.
Mohamed Salah has been the Dangan on the British coasts, but Dembele wasted little time to prove that his deadliness extended beyond the borders of France. The attacker fed Bradley Barcola with a good ball at the back before he continued his run to receive the return and bundle the ball into the net.
It was the 29th goal of Dembele this period, and more than half of it came in 2025. The ex-Borussia Dortmund Starlet has scored more goals since the turn of the year than any other player at the top five and is to restore and improve his reputation on every occasion.
Salah's legacy
The Talisman of Liverpool made his 73rd Champions League appearance for Liverpool on Tuesday evening and moved with club legend Steven Gerrard. Only Jamie Carragher has made more, with 80 performances in the competition for the Reds.
If someone doubted that the statistics of the Egyptian on Anfield, that statistics is fairly illustrative. The progress would offer Salah a possibility to break that record in just a matter of weeks, would mean an exit that it will never happen, given his uncertain contract situation.
Nevertheless, every past week sends a memory that Salah has settled as a Liverpool large. He will not be forgotten unlikely. Every further achievement this season will only see him improve his status among the legends of Anfield.
Frustrating officer
An offised flag will rarely be just as frustrating for the Reds as when the goal of Dominik Szoboszlai was excluded. While playing to prevent strict mistakes, it is earning, there is rarely a little more annoying than a goal that is refused from a time when an important period seemed to find in advance.
Diogo Jota was offside because the movement meant a danger for PSG for the first time and after an abundance of play around the box, Szoboszlai had the ball in the net. But the jubilation fell rapidly, when the linesman dedicated his flag, could not do this when Jota entered the area for the first time.
It is probably a better method, but such moments always make you wonder if it is.
More unfair was perhaps the five mistakes of the first half that were all committed by Liverpool players. Istvan Kovas pulled the anger of the Anfield-Mermey during the break, because supporters made sure that he knew exactly what they thought of his decision-making.
The moment he struck a mistake when Mo Salah fell to the ground in the 66th minute, a simple free kick and yellow card decision did not help either.
Donnarumma Vecht back
While Alisson Becker was the best keeper in the world a week, Gianluigi Donnarumma sent a few memories on Tuesday evening. The salvation of the Italian seemed to be further than full piece when he denied Luis Diaz and he was not afraid to remove the ball from his area as quickly as possible, or to get the sting out of the game.
He may not deliver the imperious outing that Alisson produced in Paris, but he turned out to be vital in moments under pressure, in particular surrounded by Liverpool bodies in set pieces. And of course, those punishments. The Italian is an impressive figure from 12 meters out and turned out to be dominant again.
Newcastle Win
With Trent Alexander-Arnold, a knock and Liverpool's first choice took XI that picks up for many minutes, Newcastle are the only figures to get some fun out of the extensive outing of the Reds. Dominik Szoboszlai, who is benching the substitutes on the substitutes, has painted the image of the team of fatigue that the team of Arne Slot will suffer.
There are plenty of days to recover, but it will be a lead that Eddie Howe will be happy to take if it can disrupt part of the preparation of his opposition.
