Darwin Nunez has admitted that he wants to 'forget' his struggles in Liverpool during the international break with his national team Uruguay.
The 25-year-old tolerates a complicated season in the Arne Slot team and this season only finds the net in 40 performances seven times.
The international break came at the best time for the Uruguayan after he had missed a crucial shot in the Penalty Shootout against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League-filled by a devastating 1-2 loss by Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final.
Arriving in Montevideo who prepared for a challenging match against Argentina, the Reds striker spoke about the 'difficult weeks' he recently suffered.
“To forget about what happens there, and moreover there is nothing more beautiful for a player than wearing the sweater of your country,” Nunez told El Pais.
'I am happy that I think of the national team and enjoy it every minute – these are moments that you go through in football.
'And as I recently said: I am not someone who throws the towel because they don't play, but I keep working so that I can play.
Although some fans had high expectations at the start of the season, Darwin Slot of his capacities could not convince and remain an irregular player before the starting team.
The 25-year-old only appeared eight times in the starting setup from his 23 Premier League matches.
“I know I don't perform as well as I should,” he went on. 'It is difficult, because if you are doing well, as when I came across PSG (the assist for the goal of Harvey Elliott), your trust changes, with the idea of breaking it in the next game.
“But then you get a malaise, and I am always there to help my teammates come back to the national team.”
Nunez described the lack of goals compared to its attacking teammates, said: 'The ball does not want to go inside. Let him run a lot, [I] Play well, and then [I am] Not able to score a goal.
In February, Slot criticized the Uruguayan for his behavior after he had missed a clear chance against Aston Villa.
The match ended with 2-2, and after Nunez's Golden Opportunity Waste, the Dutch manager claimed that he was upset about how his working speed fell afterwards.
Slot insisted that the dismay of the striker about his disappointing moment became 'too much in his head'.
His penalty attempt against Paris Saint-Germain could have ended a spectacular collision in Anfield and the Reds qualified for the next phase of the Champions League.
An overwhelming Liverpool then took Newcastle, but was only able to find their game in the late stages, when Federico Chiesa came to the score sheet in the 94th minute.
On Friday, however, Nunez is able to tackle his teammate Alexis Mac Allister's Argentina, who will miss their leader Lionel Messi because of a small injury.
“We spoke with Mac Allister because I recently told him that they would play in the Boca Juniors stadium and lose (that day lost Argentina 2-0 against Uruguay), he added.
“Now I don't want him to look at me, so he doesn't rush to me.”
