Nwaneri was utterly fearless as Arsenal demolished PSV in the last-16

Arsenal made the history of Champions League after having beat PSV 7-1 in their collision on Tuesday evening.

Danny Murphy looks at what went well for the Gunners and the implications for their European campaign.

Artetas attitude

It felt like Mikel Arteta told his players to come after PSV. It was high-tempo, high risk from the start. There was a real urgency in the Arsenal press, as if they had to get goals quickly.

The approach worked because every player was berded. Martin Odegaard has activated the press, as usual, and everyone followed, in particular the front three of Leandro Trossard, Mikel Merino and Ethan Nwaneri.

Last weekend off because of the FA Cup, she did well. It is exhausting to play every few days to win.

Any small injury has disappeared. They all looked hungry with a point to prove. Declan Rice was great and enjoying the field higher.

Fearless Nwaneri

I was in Liverpool when a 17-year-old Michael Owen bursts with this incredible self-confidence that no defender can handle him.

I get the same atmosphere with Nwaneri, who doesn't look afraid of anyone. The greater the opportunity, the better it is.

The teenager effortlessly moves with the ball, has a great touch and changes direction to find space in the tightest areas.

Many young players have the ability, but to also have the mentality to play with freedom, marks you as special. Arsenal is also helped by their middle back.

Gabriel and William Saliba are so good in individual duels that teammates can push, knowing that their defenders can treat any turnover.

Perfect food

If the Gunners could mention ideal opponents after they had not been demolished in the breaking of West Ham and Nottingham Forest, it would have been PSV, who has not won a competition match since January. The Dutch side tried to throw the songs forward, but that left rooms to exploit.

The Gunners must have loved it after teams that everyone put behind the ball.

Arsenal was ruthless and they did not rest on their laurels, not even after scoring four and five.

Last-Acht Underdogs

It is easy to assume that Arsenal is better equipped for Europe than the Premier League, but it is not that easy. Which Madrid team they also encounter in the quarters, Real of Atletico, will be a much greater challenge than PSV.

In some respects, Atletico are more dangerous because of their style; Strategic and pragmatic. Real normally is not finished – they have the best front players in the world in Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior.

Although that fits Arsenal, the pure quality of the Galacticos means that Arteta cannot repeat the PSV game plan and expect the same result.

A full-wing arsenal would find it difficult against both teams. It will be even more difficult without a striker, because Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus are injured.

Merino will improve as a false nine, but although he is sufficient as a physical presence, that will not cut the last phases of the competition.

Stay with the plan

It can be a different season of near-misses for Arsenal, but they are in a good place. They will cost too many injuries and suspensions. They could not have expected them to have losed Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Havertz and Jesus at the same time.

However, they are almost successful and deviate from the Arteta project would be a mistake. The striker problem will be tackled in the summer because otherwise the team is stronger than ever. The future is rosy, but despite their goal Bonanza on Tuesday evening, I see no trophy coming in May.
