Ruben Amorim has confirmed that Manchester United will activate Harry Maguire's one-year contract extension.
Manchester United will activate the one-year option in Harry Maguire's contract at Old Trafford, with head coach Ruben Amorim calling on the club's former captain to step up in a team 'hungry' for leadership.
Amorim, who also revealed that Amad Diallo is close to signing a new deal, spoke to Maguire in Carrington on Friday morning and confirmed that he has left the £190,000-a-week contract he signed after moving from Leicester City in 2019 for £80 million, will extend. .
Both Maguire and Diallo would become free agents in the summer if they do not sign new terms.
“Amad is close, Harry Maguire is going to activate our option,” said Amorim, referring to Maguire being stripped of the captaincy by former United manager Erik ten Hag.
“I spoke to him this morning and told him he needs to improve his game on the pitch. We really need him and he also needs to improve as a leader. We all know the situation he had here, but we're going to happily activate the option.
“There are moments in a player's career that are different and I think he has dealt with his problems very well. If you look at our team, we crave leaders on the field.
“He is a leader, he has to improve that part and he has to improve our game and we are happy to continue with him.
“If you want to be a top team you have to be a leader and we have that in the dressing room, but they have to step up. We also have many young children and this moment is very difficult. We can look at the table, but you're still Manchester United.'
The centre-back has become a regular starter under Amorim, after struggling for minutes under former boss Erik ten Hag.
The 31-year-old has been at the back in all of United's recent record-breaking three consecutive Premier League defeats.
