Anthony Gordon has withdrawn from Three Lions Camp and sustained an injury during the 2-0 victory of Friday evening over Albania.
Newcastle -Wing player Anthony Gordon has withdrawn from the team of England after he has sustained an injury in the victory over Albania. Gordon came up as a second half replacement in the 2-0 win on Friday evening before he maintained a hip problem.
The Drie Lions have now confirmed that he has returned to Newcastle for assessment and will not play a role in the match of Monday evening against Letland in Wembley.
“He looks injured,” Tuchel said on Friday evening when he was asked about Gordon's injury. “First of all, I thought it was his stomach, but it is his hip and it doesn't look good. It is a bit disturbing.”
Gordon appeared against Albania as a 74th minute replacement for Marcus Rashford. He received medical treatment on the field and later went straight through the tunnel after the last whistle to suggest that something was wrong.
The 24-year-old has nine goals and six assists in 34 performances for Newcastle so far this season and his injury is undoubtedly a blow to Tuchel prior to his second game as an English boss.
Despite the achievement of a routine victory on Friday thanks to goals from Myles Lewis-Skelly and Harry Kane, Tuchel was openly critical of his wing players due to their lack of impact. Rashford and Phil Foden were chosen to start on the flanks, but maybe their places can lose their places for the Latvia game, which means that Gordon and colleague replacement Jarrod Bowen could have been standing in line for a chance.
“We can do better, we have to do better,” Tuchel told ITV. “We started well, we had seven-eight minutes with 100 percent possession with a lot of steps and high energy, but the opponent is hard to wear out while defending in a deep, deep block.
“In all the competitions we saw in the euros, they managed not to admit opportunities, not to give goals. I felt that we were too slow and in general not running enough of the ball to find out more often.”
He added: “We hope for more impact in these positions and then we tried with Anthony and Jarrod. I hope for a little more impact with more dribbling and less passing. More aggressive runs to the box. In general, I think all the opportunities came from the first half of the first half.
“Myles scored out and Kyle Walker had one where we had the big chance to score the second. There was a bit missing that they were not as decisive as they could be.”
