Former Spain International and Liverpool -star Pepe Reina has decided to call time on his career at the age of 42. The experienced goalkeeper enjoyed a career of 26 years, in particular winning the World Cup 2010.
Reina came through La Masia in Barcelona, where he took his first steps in the professional game, but after Victor Valdes became number one, he would move to Villarreal. There he started to make a name for himself and won two intertoto cups, the first of 11 trophies he would win in his career.
His big move came in 2005, where he made the switch to Liverpool for € 9.8 million. His eight -year -old spell on Anfield was the best phase of his career as number one for its vast majority, in one side that challenged the Champions League and Premier League, although a FA Cup was the only great honor of his time there.
He would finally leave Liverpool in 2013 and join Napoli and the Coppa Italia win on loan in his first season. Reina started a very successful career as a backup, known for his experienced impact in the dressing room. That was the case in Bayern Munich, who won the Bundesliga in 2015, AC Milan, Aston Villa and Lazio, before he returned to Villarreal in 2022. After two years ago in La Ceramica, Reina joined the former Spain teammate Cesc Fabregas in Como in Como last summer.
Although the third-choice was for both Luis Aragones and Vicente del Bosque, Reina was greatly appreciated by both his contributions outside the field and in training with Iker Casillas and Victor Valdes during the Golden Age of Spain. Reina picked up medals for La Roja's historic run of two euros and a world cup between 2008 and 2012, and earned a total of 36 caps.
Reina made 951 performances in the club competition, gave 976 goals and held 361 clean sheets.
He has a last chance to add that totally against Inter on Friday for Como before he hangs his boots. Matteo Moretto has confirmed that he is now going to coach and take over Villarreal's under-19 next season.
“A very nice career comes to an end, a very complete life. I feel very happy for what I experienced. It is many years ago … I didn't expect it, but I think time has come and I feel like bringing it here,” Reina Movistar+said, as quoted by MD.
