OFFICIAL: Inigo Martínez has suffered a right hamstring tear and will be out for four weeks

Barcelona have confirmed that defender Inigo Martinez has suffered a hamstring tear and that the Basque defender will be on the sidelines for the next four weeks. Martinez was a starter for Hansi Flick alongside Pau Cubarsi this season, playing almost all of their games.

The 33-year-old Martinez went down in the first half of Barcelona's 5-2 win over Real Madrid on Sunday and was replaced by Ronald Araujo. It means he will likely miss at least seven games, although it is a reprieve from the first five weeks that was reported as recovery time.

Martinez will be absent for Real Betis (H), Getafe (A), Benfica (A), Valencia (H), Alaves (H) and Sevilla (A), as well as a potential eighth leg in the Copa del Rey quarter. final if they get past Real Betis this Wednesday.

He would theoretically return for the Champions League play-off round if Barcelona were to fall out of Europe's top eight. The logical solution is to put Araujo in place of Martinez, as worked so well on Sunday night. But with rumors that Araujo could leave the club in January, he may have to rely on Eric Garcia or Andreas Christensen, who is still without the green light for his return after an Achilles tendon problem.
