Official: Olympique Lyon is banned to Ligue 2
The National Committee for the Oversight and Financial Management of Clubs in France announced the relegation of Olympique Lyon to the Second Division on Tuesday evening, after a final assessment of its financial file, in a surprising movement that shook the French sports community.
The club has the opportunity to appeal against the decision.
The ghost of financial misery has been over Lyon since November 2024, with a provisional warning that already hangs like a dark cloud because of their precarious financial foot. With debts around the stunning figure of 175 million euros, the club is held under a strict regime: a recruitment reinforcement unless balanced by players' sales, strict wage bill of supervision and eagle-eyes of all financial outflows.
